10 Simple Tips

It goes without saying that if you want to learn, improve and become a good golfer, you should invest in some lessons with a local pro, as well as practice regularly. You can, and should, also make use of other training aids if they work for you, and these include books, DVD's, and other self-help systems. There are many out there and this site investigates and reviews some of them.

The following 10 tips assume you already have some golfing experience and are now on that long journey of self improvement:

  1. If you suffer from nerves when driving off the 1st tee, think: "accuracy NOT distance". An impressively long drive which then slices off the fairway and into trouble is a lousy start to a game, whilst a shorter iron that is straight and true will set you up for a better game and likely also reach the green in less shots.
  2. Never ever visualise or speak about a shot going wrong. Only imagine and EXPECT a perfect result... it really makes a difference.
  3. Never think about your last shot... unless it was great.
  4. Hold your head high when approaching the ball and walk positively as if you own the game.
  5. Silently (..and privately) repeat positive affirmations to yourself before and throughhout the game, and especially when walking up to your next shot. Try: "I love my golf and my golf loves me". If you believe it, you will find that your game is indeed kinder and more loving to you.
  6. Don't get hung up about a bad shot. Forget it and, in your mind, make the next shot the first shot of the game (...and remember: "accuracy NOT distance").
  7. If you are playing with friends for practice or fun, throw away the score card. When you start scoring and taking things too seriously, you stop learning. Instead just play, relax and enjoy.. and see how your attitude and game begin to improve !
  8. Be humble and enjoy congratulating others for their good shots. It won't be long before they start doing the same for you.
  9. Always arrive early to allow spare time for stretching, warming-up and practicing before a game.
  10. And above all don't play to win, play to ENJOY... the winning will then take care of itself.
